Twin Drive-in Independence MO
The Twin was one of the last new drive-ins built in the Kansas City Area. It was part of a chain of drive-ins built in the late 60's and early 70's. That include the North Twin, South Twin and the State, But each of these drive-ins featured the same distinct marquee and were considered very modern for their time. There used to be a playground next to the snack bar, But it was removed in 2002

Boulevard Drive-in Kansas City KS

The boulevard is KCs oldest continually operating theater. It was updated with DTS digital sound in 1999. It is the only DI in the area that still includes a playground for the kids. It has endured almost yearly flooding but remains open for business. Long live the Boulevard!

The I-70 was originally a single screen Drive-in. There was a playground under the screen tower. It was removed in the late 80s. 3 new screens were added in the early 90s.

The worlds only motel and drive in theater combination in Monte Vista Colorado.
How cool is THIS??
This was a beautiful Drive-In! How anyone could tear down this place absolutely baffles me. So, so sad .............
Perfect for Super Bowl games. Hook a digital cable box to the DVD projector.
Are drive in movie speakers full range?
What a great idea. Wish we had one of these up here! It's be great for summer evenings!
This particular drive 🚗 is still going strong...
Permanently closed. Thanks China.
I use to go to this drive-in all the time while growing up in Independence Mo.
Pretty awesome.....

Bring a boombox. Save your car battery.
Where is this located?
ohhh ok now i remeber they use to use those speaker so they ca heart it like flimtstone
Lived in KC for 5 years and this was my go to. I remember even bootlegging Star Wars: Attack of the Clones because George Lucas wouldn't allow his movie to be shown at drive-ins. This was heaven for a single parent of a 3 year old who wouldn't sit in a theater. Thanks for sharing.
Also, where did you get the speakers? I have a FM transmitter, but I would love to have the speakers for the effect.
Where did you get your copy of "Ten Minutes Until Showtime?"
You can find it on youtube
Okay. It looked like you had a better version than the ones posted here. I thought maybe there was a DVD compilation you purchased.
you have too many fun toys!
You have that old drive in commercials!!
I-70 will be 50 this year this Tuesday
I miss this place,my parents used to be managers there in the 90s.back when mr vaughn was the owner
I work at I-70 are you related to the Delbert and Mary Jo Elsasser or what is your parents names. I have a coworker thats been up here for 30 years and gave me names. Let me know thanks
I'm 37 I grew up going to the Twin, As the years have past my children have grown to love the Twin. My heart sunk when I was told that they were going to close last year. I was so relived to see that it is still there this year. I hope that one day my grandchildren will have the chance to enjoy what we all love so much.
Do they still have the Face/Off poster in the lobby? They still had it in 2002 I think. I'd love to go there and see films like The Outsiders, Creepshow, Eddie and the Cruisers, Road House, Meatballs, Frogs (with Sam Elliott), Blue Thunder, Arlington Road, Porky's. Does anyone know if Rocky Horror works at the drive-in? I know they do all that audience participation stuff but curious if it works as well with the fans further apart like that.
I think they changed the poster finally, but I'm not sure. B&B Theaters just bought the Twin and the I70. They have installed brand new digital projectors and now you can pay for your tickets and concessions with debit or credit cards. No more cash only.
driveinights Have they improved the speakers? We usually just relied on our car speakers because they seemed blown. Oh and I've always hoped those things are waterproof!
Kevin P I have heard that they are trying to repair or replace some of the speakers. I hope that they do, because it's usually too hot to sit in the car in the summer. The boulevard drive in in KCK has all of it's speakers still working and a DTS transmitter that supossedly provides better in car sound, although I'm sure that depends greatly on the quality of your car stereo. They also have a sitting area in front of the snackbar with speakers.
driveinights I need to go back. I also need to give I-70 another shot. I haven't been there since 1994!
I 70 has been purchased by B &B theaters and brand new digital projectors have been installed for all 4 screens.
Great news! The Twin has been upgraded to all digital projection and will be opened April 4 for a new season!
So how does the speakers work and where can one buy some?
They have RCA jacks that you can plug into any audio system and an AC power cord for the light. I bought them on Ebay. I dont think that the site I got them from is still open but there are a lot of other people sell them.
With today's technology nowadays, HDTVs can be as large as 200 inches. Maybe in the next decade, they may be as large as these drive-in movie screens without the projectors. Imagine plugging in a game console or desktop and play them outside while thousands of people watch.
I used a flip video camera to film this. The music was one of four or five choices you could use in the editing software for flip. I dont remember the name, but I could check.
Any idea what the music piece is called?
Man this would be so cool to have!
some body please invent a time machine, so I can go back to that wonderful period.
You really need to replace the urinals in the men's restroom with Sloan waterless urinals. The Sloan waterless urinals smell 100% cleaner and you don't flush so they save a lot more water. If you want to see it in action go to the Johnson county library in Leawood Ks on Roe ave before 117th street
I have a drawing I did on my group page of the North Twin on FB. This is the link if you want to join. Thanks Its called Memory KC: Drive In Theaters
1983 man
I70 opened a couple of weeks ago. The weather is going to be great for the drive in tonight.
As much as I enjoy filming abandoned drive ins, it's nice to see one that still works!
YES!
Just heard that the Twin will be opened next summer after all!
Holy smokes!!! This is a VERY nice Drive-in !!! The one my wife and I go is no where near as beautiful as this one! Ours maybe shutting down though.... Thanks for sharing! :)
thats down the road from were we live
Let's hope it'll be open next year.
Thanks. Its a 720p LCD projector. The screen in this vid is about 100 in diagonal. I have a 120 in one I bought off Ebay. I originally strung two large bed sheets between two trees. I was able to project an image of 160in on them but a lot of light bled through, washing out the image a bit.
are any of their "patrons" doing anything to help?
Its about 12 miles west, as the crow flies, probably a little farther on the highway. Are you from the area?
How far is it from the I-70 Drive-in?
Yeah, they still do intermissions.
do they still do intermissions?
Yes
SWEEEEEEEEEET!!!!!!!! :D
